- found the "impossible" room: a nineteenth-century water conduit, modern sensors, and three pressure pulses pointing to the route my father bernard traced toward the lake. less mystical, way more incriminating. nerd moment over - this is absolutely not over.
- the bag had my missing father bernard's survey stakes, a three-slot brass key, and a receipt from silas vale's transport company, so naturally i'm smiling like my coping mechanism didn't just become evidence.
- came out of the springhouse with something my father hid in the foundation - drita on the rope, arben covering the entrance, and me still feeling watched.
- three pulses match the lake. a fourth only appears under my dad's old film audio, and "probably interference" is doing heroic amounts of work tonight.
- i wanted to open the wall; the wall had other plans. arben, my albanian field lead, won this round - irritatingly and correctly. the cable can wait. my skull would appreciate it.
- the spring channel is almost dry, the wall is still carrying the lake's three-pulse signal, and there's a modern cable behind the bricks - naturally, my field team says we don't open it yet. i hate when the sensible option is also correct.
- found the road my father bernard marked - and fresh tire tracks through the locked gate. hate being right almost as much as i hate being late.
- my dive guide tried to give me three rules for my own expedition. i accepted two, so obviously this is diplomacy. the third was "don't chase your father's trail alone," which is adorable - but apparently non-negotiable.
- found a fresh copper marker wired into the lake floor, cut it loose, saved the clue, and killed the boat. technically a mixed review. nico says this is why albanian dive guides don't let me celebrate underwater.
- the lake answered the recording, then samir's little modern listening device answered back. diving before sunrise with my sonar contractor because apparently sleep is for people with less complicated fathers.
- the harbor sounds like chains, footsteps, and several regrettable choices - and the charming man with information about my missing father, obviously.
- when your rival hands you a photo of your missing father, you call it evidence - not a gift. and you keep one hand free.
